Hulu next for Xbox 360, says Twitter tweet

It was just last week that Sky announced the some of its channels will be available on the Xbox 360, but the move has prompted talk of other content providers joining in.

The latest is Hulu. The US video-streaming website owned by some of the biggest broadcasters in America – NBC Universal, Fox and Disney – is rumoured to be heading to the Xbox after US presenter Olivia Munn put on her Twitter account this following revealing tweet: "Just finished promos for hulu/microsoft event I'm doing on june 8!"

Bigging up a Bingathon

With this, the internet was ablaze with much rumour and speculation about whether the US was going to get its version of the Sky deal on the Xbox 360.

Turns out, however, all that was revealed within Munn's tweet was her lack of technology nous.

She was actually referring to a Microsoft/Bing event happening 8 June to celebrate the arrival of the search engine.

The event is going to be called 'Bingathon' and will celebrate all things Bing. What Munn did announce was that the all-day event would be transmitted on Hulu.

This isn't the first time that Hulu has been mooted for the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3. And it does point to a lack of TV streaming on the console in the US.

If Hulu does become available for the console then it will be interesting to see if a UK version will happen – given that the service should be available in Blighty before the year is up.

Coming Soon — SafeTube?

Coming Soon — SafeTube? You might not have noticed, but there’s a new safety center on YouTube, available via a link at the bottom of every page on the video-sharing site. It offers advice on advice on bullying and links to support groups. But as it was launched, YouTube was already considering more, depending on how popular the new safety features prove to be. "One of the things we're looking at is whether it is possible to create a separate YouTube site, an opt-in 'SafeTube' site for families," said policy head Victoria Grand. SafeTube would be an opt-in that didn’t include age-restricted videos and would delete expletives. "If they are selecting to be

E3 2009 coverage starts tomorrow

batmane3

Time sure does fly. It’s been a whole year since Devin and I popped our E3 cherries and we find ourselves back in LA for what is expected to be a return to glory for the Electronic Entertainment Expo. Not much going on today except for a few parties, but I did pass the convention center on my way to the hotel and noticed that Ubisoft and Sony dropped crazy money on signage.

Draping one section of the CC was a rather large Assassin’s Creed 2 banner, but I’m not entirely sure what Sony’s banner was all about. It was a shot of someone’s arm from the elbow down holding up a Sixaxis controller. There was one other banner going up but I couldn’t make out what it was from the van.

Anyway, Microsoft, EA and Ubisoft will hold press conferences tomorrow at 10:25AM PT, 2PM PT and 5PM PT, respectively. The Xbox 360 press conference was originally scheduled for 10:30AM, but an e-mail went out a couple hours ago with the following statement:

Please be advised that due to a very special addition to our Media Briefing tomorrow, we will be starting 5 minutes early at 10:25am.

Whatever you say, Microsoft.

Nintendo’s press conference is on Tuesday at 9AM PT with Sony going on at 11AM PT. Konami’s press conference is scheduled for 3PM PT on Wednesday and we’ll be at everything getting the lowdown for you guys. In between all of those shenanigans the CG team will be playing tons of video games that you guys won’t get to play for months. Heh.

And how cool is my hotel keycard? It was the Bats or Mr. J mouthing off about being exclusive on the PlayStation 3.

Introducing the Liliputing Forums v2, and the Liliputing Community

liliputing-community

I mentioned last week that I had to take the forums temporarily to deal with a security issue. Here’s what it was: basically the site got hacked. As far as I can tell, someone used the forums to upload a script that made its way into the main web site and caused pages to load slowly. I think it may also have been attempting to do deeper damage by redirecting site visitors, but I didn’t see any evidence of this first hand.

The forums were the only section of the web site where users could upload files as avatars, pictures, or other attachments. And that’s always going to pose a security risk. So after thinking things over, I’ve decided to take a new approach in relaunching the forums. I didn’t want to bring you a stripped down forum that doesn’t offer personalization options. But I don’t have the time or expertise to wage a full out battle against malicious hackers. So instead I’m outsourcing the forums to Ning, a service that can handle threats in a more secure fashion. You can find the new forums by clicking the forums link in navigation bar at the top of this page. Or you can bookmark the new page for the Liliputing Forum.

As an added bonus, the new forums are part of a larger Liliputing Community site that offers users the ability to upload photos, videos, create personal profiles, and generally get their social networking on. There’s even a built-in instant messaging feature that will let you chat in real-time with other users that are online. Oh yeah, you can also post threaded messages in the forums section. I’m still tinkering with the new site, so feel free to share any suggestions, either here or at the Liliputing Community/Forum page. I’m even open to changing the name if you think “community” sounds too cheesy.

I didn’t want to make all the old posts that you’ve uploaded over the past few months disappear in a poof of smoke. So I’ve brought back the old forums as well, but just for archival purposes. You can still read over all of the posts at www.liliputing.com/forums, but I’ve disabled new member registrations and new posts from existing members.

Square/new Roomba coming sooner than later?

Could a new Roomba be hitting the streets? Tipster Kason Jinkaid writes:

Not sure if this excites you, but I heard from a Costco salesperson
that they’re getting new Roombas “soon”, though that could mean
months. They aren’t stocking the ones they’ve been carrying (model
550). Also Woot just sold off a bunch for 535s for ~$100 less than
what they usually sell for, so are probably clearing out inventory.

If anything, you can get yourself a cheap 550 or 535?

I doubt sincerely this means the arrival of the square Roomba we talked about last week but it could mean a refreshed model going out to big box stores. We’ll investigate a bit.

Video: Refractor telescope from 1934 still in use at Philadelphia’s Franklin Institute

Derrick Pitts, lead astronomer at Philadelphia’s Franklin Institute, talks about the telescope used in the Bloom Observatory. The 10-inch refractor telescope has been around since 1934, and was built by Carl Zeiss Jena and shipped over from Germany.

Here’s more from the Franklin Institute’s web site:

The original observatory, opened in 1934, had two telescopes. The 10-inch, f/15 refractor, built by Carl Zeiss Jena, employed the latest optical and engineering techniques available in pre-World War II Germany. The 24-inch reflector telescope, manufactured by J.W. Fecker of Pittsburgh, was a convertible Newtonian/Cassegrain instrument with focal ratios of 14.4 and 7, respectively. The reflector was used for deep-sky observations, including the first recovery sighting of Comet Halley in the fall of 1985. City light pollution eventually rendered it ineffective, and the scope was moved to the Institute’s Space Command exhibit.
Bloom Observatory was renovated in 2006. Nationally-recognized telescope mechanic, Christopher Ray, of Ray Museum Studios and a professor of Mechanical Engineering from Swarthmore College, completely rebuilt the Zeiss refractor, upgrading it with modern PC-controlled DC-servo drives to achieve GO-TO pointing accuracy of better than 0.2 arc-seconds on both axes. The upgrade enables visitors to see not only the only the usual, but also thousands of faint objects (down to about magnitude 13)–despite high levels of ambient light pollution.
