Sienna Miller gave an interview this week, outing herself and Keira Knightly as closet geeks. While filming The Edge Of Love in Wales the two shared a cottage and, according to Miller: “We’re quite nerdy. We talk about books and we play cards and do The Guardian crossword.”
Sorry Sienna, but that’s not nearly nerdy enough for us. There are plenty of celebrities cranking the geek up to 11. Read on for the top ten true celebrity nerds!
1. Stephen Fry
Stephen Fry is the crown prince of geekiness. With over 286,000 followers on Twitter he’s second only to Barack Obama (see geek number six), and not only is he smart enough to know how every bit of tech in the world works, he owns most of it too. From heaping praise on the iPhone to slamming the BlackBerry Storm with a few choice words, he has his finger on the electronic pulse of the world. And he’s not just concerned with new gadgets.
At a recent talk at the Apple Store on London’s Regent St he even admitted to owning a replica of the NEXT computer Sir Tim Berners-Lee used to develop HTTP, the language of the World Wide Web. Fry says he’s trying to convince the godfather of the web to give him an exact copy of the original HTTP code, so he can build a shrine “because as I told you, I am, sad.”
2. Jonathan Ross
Wossy is a renowned nerd and Japanophile. Less well known is his obsession with all things Apple. The BBC’s highest-paid star even fronted an Apple ad campaign in 1998, explaining that he chose a Mac because “like Jonathan, it is stylish to look at, very, very productive and extremely versatile.”
Last year Ross excelled himself, even by fanboy standards, splashing out on five brand new Apple laptops in a single trip to the Apple store (Whoops, Wossy himself tells us he never bought those laptops), as well as fitting his house with a Sonos music streamer. As if that wasn’t enough, Ross claims to own 28 mobile phones (according to the big JR, he doesn’t have this many phones either. Maybe we should bump him lower down the list!) and has a collection of classic video games.
3. Paris Hilton
Paris Hilton is a gadget addict. Don’t believe us? Then do a quick Google to see how ‘intimate’ she got with her T-Mobile Sidekick a few years ago, before it was hacked and the contents stolen, that is. Since then she’s been spotted with Nokia’s newest touchscreen handset the 5800 XpressMusic, as well as an iPhone 2G. She’s also been documenting her worldwide travels with a Flip Video camcorder.
Now, Paris. Do we really need to warn you, of all people, of the dangers of online video? Maybe you’d better leave the Flip at home after all.
4. Philip Schofield
Silver surfer Philip Schofield isn’t just the grinning face of daytime telly, he’s the Twittering voice of the internet too. He might only have a third the follows of Stephen Fry, but he’s almost as addicted. We’ve spotted him tweeting through the ad breaks of This Morning (using, we understand, a laptop borrowed from the production crew), as well as through an iPhone and BlackBerry.
Phil has even roped his brother in, setting him up with Twitter and encouraging his fans to follow him too.
His Twitter software of choice is Tweetdeck, a fairly advanced application using Adobe’s all-new AIR platform. Geeky? Absolutely, but in a charming and approachable way, just like his on-screen persona. We wait with baited breath for the arrival of @GordonTGopher.
5. Jeremy Clarkson
Clarkson might be a petrol head, but we didn’t have him pegged as a gadget freak, until we spotted him waving an iPhone about on Top Gear before it was released in the UK. That means Mr Clarkson’s either very chummy with Apple’s PR department, or he had an iPhone flown to Britain and Jailbroken to work on our networks.
Of course, being Clarkson, he’s quite a grumpy tech fan. He says mobile phones are “full of ridiculous features that you neither need nor want” and even the iPhone has come in for some casual criticism. But he did travel all the way to Japan to buy a Sony Rolly, and holds his clunky old Nokia 6210 dear to his heart too, as a phone that’s “more reliable than a carrier pigeon.”
6. Barack Obama
The Commander in Geek is the most tech savvy politician the world has ever seen. He’s pretty much bullied the CIA into letting him keep his precious BlackBerry, and on election night sparked a wave of news nerdiness, with NBC using a Microsoft Surface touchscreen computer to illustrate his victory, while CNN went one better, using a “holographic” reporter to recount his progress towards power.
In the run up to his election, Obama also bought advertising space inside computer games, reaching out to young voters using Madden ‘09 and Grand Theft Auto. His weekly addresses were even the first downloadable YouTube videos. Who says politicians are out of touch?
7. Anne Hathaway
We’re deeply jealous of Anne Hathaway. Not because she’s a movie star, but because she’s got a Palm Pre. The hottest smartphone of the year isn’t even out yet, but Hathaway’s got one. And what’s worse, she got it for free.
The Devil Wears Prada star was given a Palm Pre simply for being nominated (and showing up to) the IFC’s Independent Spirit Awards. OK, so she might not have asked for the Pre specifically, but she’s certain to be using it. Some geeks have all the luck.
8. Russell Brand
Pensioner-bothering Brand might seem more interested in fishnets than internets, but he’s actually a closet geek. He’s currently chasing his 100,000th follower on Twitter, after which he says then plan is to “unite the mob”… presumably to single handedly abuse call centres.
He also used his (now canceled) Radio 2 show to recount memories of owning a ZX Spectrum, and playing the fiendishly difficult Ghostbusters game, along with its “non-funky” theme tune. He even hummed the tune, note-for-note and pitch perfect on the show. Predictably, he’s happy to have his face slapped across the web too: This picture was posted to Twitter by none other than Jonathan Ross.
9. Cameron Diaz
Ah, Cameron Diaz. We’ve known for a while that she was kooky, but did you know the Charlies Angel was also geeky? She’s regularly seen carrying a BlackBerry Curve, but that’s not the only bit of portable kit to enjoy the pleasure of her company.
She’s also a big fan of the Amazon Kindle, and has been seen cradling a MacBook Air too. Possibly because it’s the only gadget slimmer than she is.
10. Heidi Klum
Heidi is one helluva high tech girl. She owns an iPhone (at least, she owns an iPhone 2G, we’re not sure if she’s upgraded to the iPhone 3G yet) and even advertises Guitar Hero World Tour wearing only underwear. She’s also been spotted using a BlackBerry 8700, and anyone with two smartphones in their pocket is a geek in our book. Not all of them, however, are this pretty.
